More Netflix: THX1138, Bowling for Columbine

THX1138 was pretty interesting. Excellent filmmaking for the time. Story in shades of Brave New World and The Machine Stops. Very … sparse, sterile even.

Bowling for Columbine was interesting. Moore makes an interesting couple hours of watching. I enjoyed watching him pin the blame for everything on the shallow, plastic violence of the news media and the reckless, shameless lack of stewardship of corporate America. He paints an interesting picture of the terrified-consumer culture that he perceives.

I don’t really know enough normal people closely enough these days that I can say “that rings true” or “that’s totally bullshit”. But it’s interesting, at very least.

Like all Moore works, it’s best tempered by the opposing viewpoint. (Thanks to Tsunami for the linkage)

It’s also interesting to think of just how … difficult it is to come up with the point of the movie. Usually something presented in this way either comes to a point, or doesn’t present itself as trying to. Bowling … sort of stutters around, not really pointing in the same direction as itself 5 minutes ago. Which is just odd.
