scheduling dilemma

I’ve got a scheduling dilemma, and I’m not sure how to resolve it.

So here’s the story.

After this semester, I’ve got 2 psych classes (240 – social psych, and 222 – fundamental psychobiology) to take, as well as one other liberal arts class (polisci 130) for the core requirements, and I’m done with the psych degree. I’ve got one more phil class to take, and I’m done with the phil minor, and I’ve got two more CS classes to take and I’m done with the CS major.

So, for the summer, I’m signed up for Psy 240k (maymester) and pol 130 (summer session). That leaves 4 classes to take: 2 300+ level CS electives, psy 222, and a phil class.

Now, when I take psy 222, I’ll graduate with the psych degree that semester. And when I finish the CS electives, I’ll get the CS degree, that semester. Ideally, I’d like to graduate only once (because of the classes I’ve got left to retake, all but the phil elective and one CS elective will be retakes, and do nothing but positive reflection on my gpa).

Now, I’ve also got a constraint. It’s stupid to take 3 classes in a semester, because taking two classes costs $1100, and taking 3 costs $2500. It’s a waste of $1400! Further, if I’m in less than 6 credit hours (2 classes), I’ll re-enter repayment on the loan that I can’t afford to pay, so I can’t take a one-class semester. Meaning, I’m taking 2 classes per semester in fall and spring, or I’m all but quitting my job in fall and taking 4 classes and getting it all done in one shot and graduating in december. But that means financial problems all that semester, which ain’t cool. So I’d like to stick to 2 classes a semester.

Now, none of this is inherently incompatible. I know what class I’m taking in the fall for CS (it’s CS 483 – intro to the theory of computation). I have two or three good candidates for spring (most likely candidate is CS 422 – Networking retake). Psy 222 is offered spring and fall both.

So here’s the problem. None of the phil classes that I want to take for the phil minor elective are offered in the fall. They’re all spring-only classes.

So what do I do? I’ve got two non-CS classes to take, and one to take in fall and one to take in spring. But if I want to take one of the phil classes I’ve been wanting to take for the last 3 years, I’ll have to bump the psych class out of the spring slot, which would mean accidentally graduating with psych in decemeber, and then with CS in may. I could settle for not having the phil class I want, taking another one, and getting both degrees in one shot… but that’s not fun, and I’d feel like I was screwing myself.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and do psy 222 in the fall. Graduate once, do the last CS and the phil class in the spring and get the rest of it.

Probably best if I just talk to my advisor on the 29th and get her input… that’s just 2 weeks away, after all.
