A new toy (or, “trouble in cell-phone land”)

OK, so as anyone who has tried to talk to me on the phone in the last 6 months knows, my old cell phone has a serious problem: it randomly drops calls. Other cell phones in the apartment don’t exhibit this problem, and my phone does, even with line-of-sight to the tower (ie: in my lab).

So when my contract became upgrade-eligible, I opted to grab a new nifty black Razr v3 (and another 2 years with cingular … seems like a safe bet at this point).

Well, the phone came today, and I charged it per the instructions, and then I dropped the old SIM in and copied the phone book to the phone, then powered it back off and dropped in the new SIM. Instructions said that it would self-register within 2 hours. It didn’t…

So about the time I was going to go call and register the SIM and get it up and running, my roommate takes a couple pictures with it, and has trouble operating it… because some of the buttons simply stopped working. They still click, they just don’t send a signal.

That’s sort of a problem.

The only nav buttons that work are send, end, up, left, menu, and the rightmost click button. Further, the numbers 5, 6, 8, 9, and the * button don’t work.

I tell ya … I’ve known for a while that I have bad luck. This is just bad luck.

On the bright side, I’ll be out at the mall tomorrow anyway, getting guitar hero, so chances are I’ll be able to hit up the cingular kiosk out there and get a new one, and get it activated on the spot too.

Still … GRR. Ya know?
