Yet another “Life and Times” update

So, I got communication between my two webservers to be entirely wrapped in ipsec (aes-hmac-sha1) yesterday, and today extended that to enable nfsv4 over that tunnel. This makes me happy, except that the original reason I did that doesn’t seem to be strictly necessary (ie: php sessions appear to cause the browser to affine with a particular system, rather than bouncing back and forth on round-robin dns). So apparently the NFS part is probably unnecessary, but it’s still nice wrapping up the mysql replication in that. And when I set up rsync between them, I’ll also be able to comfortably wrap that up, which makes me just as happy.

Around that, I managed to break XGL at work during a routine-seeming update. But it’s fine, I’m going to just deal with it until another routine-seeming update rolls down the overlay, and if that doesn’t magically fix it, I’ll just start rebuilding things until it works, or until I get sick of it and revert my GDM config to not use XGL anymore. Either way … long as I’ve got a working system I’m fine either way I guess.

Apparently my stepmom’s mom died today, after a long and incredibly painful fight with cancer. She held out a long time, but it eventually got her. I didn’t know her well enough to really feel anything about it, just another bit of unhappy news I spose. A sign of the times, for someone as universally disconnected as I am, I suppose.

I also finally got the Sallie Mae site access issues I’ve been having squared away, found out my loan status, and fortunately they got the info about me being a student this semester and re-deferred repayment until december. So things are working, and I can check on them — two good things to have dealt with.

I’ve noticed that my low-fat diet lately has a tendency to be high in sodium. I’m going to try to trim that back next time I buy food. I think lunchmeats probably fall into that category too though … which will make that hard to deal with.

Nerdout bachelor-party last weekend was loads of fun. Got fairly loaded Saturday, hung out chatting and such Sunday. Between the higher fat intake those two days and the fairly large quantity of alcohol consumed, my innards are still not quite happy with me, but they’re getting back to normal, so it’s all good I guess. Nick (the guy who’s getting married) is always loads of fun to be around, and with a fairly large group of people there, there was a LOT of nerding out.

Dreamhost had some pretty big problems yesterday, which got me a couple confused emails and a confused im session or two, as I explained that there wasn’t much I could do about the hosting company imploding, but that it’d probably be back up and running within a day. Sure enough, it was, so I’m, fine with it.

Next things on the todo list: configuring apache vhosts (easy), writing backup scripts (easy), writing a synchronization script using rsync (fairly easy), and then back to the activedirectory/kerberos/ldap stuff.
