Fun with scales

So, I finally broke down, got sick of not knowing and having to guess, and on a whim on a walmart run with Adam, I grabbed a scale. It’s accurate to 0.1 lbs up to 380, so I figured I’d be covered.

Turns out … yeah, more than covered.

Back in December, when the whole gallbladder episode hit and I went on the low-fat diet, I went to a followup visit with one of the PUSH doctors about a week later. Didn’t mention it at all, but among other things she confirmed that I still had slightly high bloodpressure (not surprising), was still around 6’8 inches tall, and found that I weighed right around 343.

I figured the low-fat diet thing would probably bring that down, and lately I’ve noticed clothes generally feel a little more comfortable. Other people who haven’t seen me in a while have commented that I definitely look like I’ve lost weight … but of course I didn’t really feel any different.

So … yeah, I finally got tired of guessing, I bought a scale, I stepped on it, then I said “what? really??” Then I stepped off of it, and back onto it, and said “huh, I guess so! Cool”

The scale said 311.4. Meaning in 34 weeks I’ve lost about 32 pounds. That’s … actually pretty damned good, right in the neighborhood of a pound a week, without really dramatically changing my lifestyle, just my diet, and that in an enjoyable, sustainable way (though, I must admit I miss pizza from time to time). That’s also about 2 pounds away from a 10% reduction in body weight, and brings me down 3.5 BMI points (not that I give BMI a whole lot of credence …).

Incidentally, back around the time I first came to purdue, I weighed in at about 315. So I’m actually just slightly slimmer than I was then.

So, the plan is this: stay on the low-fat diet. Check out my weight about once a week. Try to cut back on sodium intake and increase veggies. Try to make exercise a more regular thing (especially upper body strength and cardio … I’m still pretty strong because of my size, but I definitely don’t have the upper body strength I had a few years ago — kthx, sedentary lifestyle). Also, try to normalize the sleep pattern a bit more, ’cause … well … you know, sleep is awesome.

Anyway, I’m pretty happy with the results, so I thought I’d share.
