Unfulfilled goals …
So, a couple weeks back I set a goal: “before school starts, I’m going to flesh out the skeletal posts I’ve got saved, and publish them”.
I … err … didn’t make it. Last couple weeks I just haven’t bothered to get around to it. Lots of thinking, a bit of time at work, lots of time wasted… but I think I can consider it necessary downtime.
Classes have started up. I’m one of ten people in my 400-level CS theory class… the material seems pretty tasty and the prof is entertaining, so I’m hoping for a good semester there — though I have to admit, I’m a bit worried about the level of abstraction that the class could take. This could be really, really rough, it’s hard to call.
Psychobiology is a bit bigger, probably 75 or 80 people in the class. The location is decent (EE170), and the time is ok (3:00 power hour) … prof seems cool too. I like the class format too … the prof’s making the “A” cutoff an 88 (which is pretty friendly of him). That, and he’s dropping lowest exam grade, and there’s 5 exams to take… so there’s some leeway.
Following a semester and a summer of 3.5 gpas, my goal this semester is a 4.0. I think it’s attainable. Have yet to determine what the classes will say about it though

Work is a bit slow, not much going on from the systems side. Biosecurity site went live last week on my nifty replicating load-balanced setup, and I got a neat deployment plan and backup solution in place which makes life happier, too. Nothing much on the sharepoint front — same el-same-o. Not motivated to play with win serv 2k3 and all that stuff, the things I could be doing at work are both tedious and inconsequential… so I’m sort of idling, finding ways to pass the time, but probably not passing enough of it.
I’ve had two nibbles trying to get rid of the cheaper couch and the coffee table. The couch didn’t sell just because the idiots didn’t get that you can’t take a couch apart and put it into a car. It just doesn’t work! Coffee table, people came in and looked at it, and the girl said “no, it’s too short”. It’s a FUCKING COFFEE TABLE. IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE SHORT.
Anyway, I’ve sort of given up. I rearranged the living room, so all the furniture at least fits in it and is sort of usable. I need to pick up a couple brackets and a board to stick the center channel on the wall, and the front right speaker in the corner, and then maybe take a pic … it could actually be a nice setup like it is. Especially if I drop in a Y-adapter and stream music on my laptop, or find a long-ish cable and do the same from my fileserver. That could be sorta cool …
I want to revamp my fileserver though. Not enough spare cash to do it, but I’d love to switch it to a mini-itx type setup with just like … one or two disks. That’d be slick. Or even just change it to a network appliance and consolidate all the data on a drive in my desktop system … now that I’m not really sharing with anyone on my network, that could be a reasonable option too. Either way, 1.1TB of data is too much to do that with, so I just ordered a dvd burner and some media, and I’m gonna burn off some unnecessary on-drive data (I can think of about 500-600 gigs of it that don’t need to be live …).
I spent some time this weekend grappling with a bit of an existential crisis… but now that I’ve got classes going again, I sort of feel like I’ve got a purpose. So, I guess … existential crisis is on hold until Christmas
