nerdy todo overflow

So, I spent all evening reinstalling my boss’s laptop (you know the deal … format, windows, office, visual studio 2k3, visual studio 2k5, windows and office patches, more windows and office patches, acrobat, photoshop, flash, a dozen random other apps). Took entirely too long, too.

I spent the downtime waiting for installs (mainly the format itself, visual studio and windows updates) reading the text for Theory of Computation. Two lectures in, and I’m looking forward to tomorrow, even if it IS on like 5 and a half hours of sleep. The book is pretty damned high-level (as you’d expect), so it’s slow going, but it’s a very readable approach to the material too. I want to sit down this weekend and work through the chapter 1-3 examples and really walk through the proofs, try to get where they came from. Time permitting, of course :p.

Psychobiology is also interesting. The book is actually really well-written. I spent an hour or so yesterday reading through the first and into the second chapter, and there were actual jokes! Like … 3 or 4 of them. A couple really entertaining anecdotes and explanations. In general, it was just like the prof said: as clear and interesting an approach as anyone could possibly write on the subject.

So those two textbooks are on the “TODO” list. I also want to do a site template redesign, make my layout both a little cleaner and a little more shiney (ie: rewrite the CSS and PHP bits to behave how I want them to from the start, and make things look slightly nicer). Another thing.

I just made a test install of Joomla, just for kicks. It seems interesting, and it’s something I think I’m going to play with more at work (’cause it seems work-relevant). I’m waiting on dreamhost’s 1-click installer to come back with an ActiveCollab install, too … when it does, I’ll play around with that. Another probably work-related thing. It’s also on the todo.

I noticed that I haven’t updated the “basic install” stuff in a while, so sometime I’m going to have to update winamp, itunes/quicktime, pull out ffdshow and install cccp, update opera and mozilla suite, some other random crap. Todo, todo, todo. That’s probably this weekend.

I still need to get back to playing with ADS+smb integration, and I’d like to do another nessus run on my whole network. Also like to learn how to _correctly_ secure static content (as opposed to just bury it in 2 or 3 easy levels of indirection). Another thing to play with when I’ve got time.

It’s funny … when I didn’t have class, I ended up fishing for things to do, being bored, not really engaging at work. I was just sort of existing. Now, not even a week later, I’m not staying up till 8 am out of boredom, I’m staying up till 5 am out of desire to do more stuff before tomorrow!

… Also, I’m thinking about starting to take a calcium supplement. Looking at my normal diet, now that I’ve cut out cheese on top of everything else, I’m down to basically incidental sources of calcium, so I’m probably only getting about 1/5 of the RDA now, which isn’t good. My bones gotta be strong to carry me, even if they’re carrying less of me than before.
